Of all the seasons in my life, my 5th season is the one I have looked forward to for a long time! Your childhood, adolescent then teenage years are all about growing up & discovering the world around you.
College comes next and you "think" you know what you want to do with your life and that you actually have control over it. I obtained my BFA degree with a major in Graphic Design at the University of Georgia. Even though I grew up in Athens, there was a whole new world that evolved within the campus of UGA. My goal was to enter into the world of advertising but I fell in love.
Marriage and motherhood were upon me before I could even blink. The year's I spent raising my two daughters, while fully engulfed in the corporate world, were swift and full of adventure. Luckily, the creative side of me was not completely abandoned during this time. Between constantly re-decorating my home(s), sewing, painting backdrops for dance recitals (talk about a huge canvas!), competition cheerleading "team mom", designing t-shirts, sorority sheet signs...you get the picture. But there was never enough time in the day, weeks or years to return to my studio on a regular basis.
And now the house is empty! My children have flown the coup and I have been fortunate enough to take early retirement from my corporate day job. So here I am, back in my home studio, full speed ahead towards the 5th season of my life, following my passion . . . painting FULL TIME!
MY CREATIVE PROCESS
You're never too old to learn! A lot has changed over the years since graduating. "Back in the day" we learned to do EVERYTHING by hand . . . no computer aided, digitally altered anything. My work is a culmination of many years of studying, learning, practicing and re-inventing myself as an artist.
My process is a playful exploration of colour and shapes as well as different materials. The right side of my brain loves the freedom of abstraction but the left side of my brain tends to steer me back to my Graphic Design roots . . . structure, symmetry, realism and precision. It's a constant tug-of-war! I work with acrylics, oils, inks and pastels. I don't like the limitations of one medium.
I enjoy working on a "series" of work at one time. Each painting within the series is related in some way, whether it be by colour palette, theme, unifying marks, or stemming from the same idea. My goal, instead of releasing one piece at a time, is to introduce the completed series all at once. But as I begin my journey I will be working towards that goal with specific release dates.
